DINING WITH OTHERS

What do I eat when I’m alone? What do I tend to eat too much of? How do I feel during family dinners? Dining with Others is a temporary community of people, whether just immigrated to the city or went through a breakup, wishing to meet and dine with others. The collaborative artistic process was established into and out from within the communal dinner. Some participants prepared meals that echoed crises and tension in their relationships with their relatives, while others wished to celebrate by signifying recipes as a remedy. To emphasise and contemplate their chosen dish, the participants engaged in a dialog with a machine-learning model that reflected on their personal experiences through the global visual subconscious. The output was then used as a reference by the participants for engraving and then printing their personal interpretation of it.

In transforming the intimate meetings into a physical exhibition we wished to realise the experiences into volumes. We were eager to exaggerate, emphasise and preserve the recipes and the preparation methods the collaborators shared with us. It ended up in experimentation with prolonged baking processes towards carbonization of the ingredients, and a disburden of their nutritional values.
